Walnut Ridge Estates in Shrewsbury was one of the early cluster developments to be construction in town, where the builder proposes a reduction in the lot sizes, in exchange for setting aside large portions of the development for common area. As such, they are often able to fit in a few more homes, but yet the homes don’t feel squeezed together, and have use of a lovely ball field and playground as well.
The site was built by AJ Lane, who had been constructing homes in the region for decades. Andy always focused on keeping things affordable and basic, offering a quality product at a price that was within reach of the consumers. In the end, the development came out just wonderful, and at one point or another I probably sold 30% or more of the homes in the entire project, several of them two or three times over the years. As time progressed, many people upgraded the interior features, adding more bells and whistles, finishing basements and putting on additions.
The thing I always liked about Walnut Ridge, however, was the sense of community that is palpable in the neighborhood. I can still remember when we used to have block parties there at the ball field, with pony rides, music and activities for the toddlers, most of whom now are grown and off to college.
There are three streets within the development itself, Hillando Drive, being the main thoroughfare, and then the two cul-de-sacs, Bayberry and Old Farm Circle, which had most of the larger homes down at the end. Always one of my favorite developments, and whenever I get a new listing at Walnut Ridge, it’s sure to go quickly.
